A Horse's Tale: Ten Adventures in 100 Years
Published in Paperback by Parenting Pr (January, 1989)
Authors: Nancy Luenn and Connie J. Pope
Average review score:

History and Multicultural Points of View... All in One!
A Horse's Tale is a collection of ten short stories that have a number of common themes. It is about a wooden toy horse that gets passed around to a different child living in Washington State each decade. The horse is carved by a Native American Uncle who gives it to his niece as she is leaving her home to attend a mission boarding school in the late 1800's. In each subsequent chapter, ten years pass and the horse has found itself in the arms of a different child.

The children in each chapter are from diverse cultural backgrounds. The horse is passed to an African American boy living in Roslyn, a Japanese girl living in an internment camp in Puyallup, a Laotian girl living in Seattle and six others. Each decade illustrates the challenges that the minority culture is facing at that particular time in history.

100 years pass as the reader learns about the history and culture of Washington State through the experiences of the children living there.

I have used this book in my 4th grade classrooms as an overview of the different cultures, experiences, and history of our state. It is a wonderful introduction to the geography of our state, giving us something to which we refer back as we study maps of our area.

Hunting with the Bow & Arrow
Published in Paperback by Sylvan Toxophilite Classics (15 November, 2000)
Author: Saxton Pope
Average review score:

A must read for any modern archer!!!!
Saxton Pope, one of the fore-fathers of modern achery, takes you on a journey of archery back in the early 20th century. This is a very informative and captivating read. Anybody with an interest in archery will find this book hard to lay down.

Pope begins with the story of the last Yana indian, Ishi, which he became close friends with. He speaks of Ishi's equipment and his methods, and their adventures together. Fasinating!!!

He then explains how to make and use the archery equipment which he and his comrades, Art Young and Will Compton, used on their many excursions.

These excursions are then written about in detail in a manner which carries you back into the early 1900's!! Many of these adventures, such as lion and bear hunting, had never before been undertaken by modern bowhunters, and an air of uncertanity existed. In one story a charging grizzly is stopped just a few steps away!!! Awsome!!! You'll have to read it to find out more!!!

I feel sure it will become one of your all time favorites!!!!

In My Own Words: Pope John XXIII
Published in Hardcover by Liguori Publications (October, 1999)
Authors: Pope John Xxiii, Anthony F. Chiffolo, Pope John XXIII, and John
Average review score:

"In My Own Words A Treasure"
One of the best loved, as well as wittiest, Popes of all time, Pope John XXIII was famous for his insightful quotes. In this book, editor Anthony F. Chiffolo draws upon John XXIII's books, encyclicals, notes, personal letters, reports, speeches and radio addresses to present a very personal, very warm and very human picture of Pope John XXIII. The quotes are helpfully grouped into sections such as "Humility and Poverty," "Suffering," "God's Will," "Justice and Charity," "Peace," "Truth," and "Modern Issues." It is easy to find the right quote for the right occasion. The book offers a unique look into a man who is on his way to sainthood in the Catholic church. One of John's quotes in the book is "The older I grow the more I find that supreme wisdom is found more in the little, simple books." That is especially true about this book, which, though small, provides an excellent insight into one of the greatest figures of the 20th Century.

Is the Pope Catholic
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (April, 2000)
Author: John Cantwell Kiley
Average review score:

This is not your ordinary novel!
This book is the culmination of a lifetime of study, research and writing in the metaphysical genre for John Cantwell Kiley, Ph.D., M.D.

Kiley has written several other books, including Self Rescue, Equilibrium, and Einstein and Aquinas: A Rapprochement. This, however, is his first serious attempt at fiction. It is a "novel autobiography" of the next Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, and it is highly imaginative.

Kiley, in the book, has Jesus Christ emerge to assist the Pope and give him guidance "in the flesh," so to speak. There is much moving about of planets, tripping through time with abandon, "talking in tongues" and other hi-jinks going on, as well as the thread of a love-story in the midst of it all.

But, the story line aside, the thing that will make this book valuable to a certain coterie of readers, the numbers of whom are unknown, is the author's metaphysics. For John Kiley is, first and foremost, a metaphysician.

People who simply read fiction for entertainment will likely be bored by some of the long dissertations. But those dissertations are the very things that will make the book attractive to others.

The book will likely anger many Catholics, who will be incensed at the attempt by a group of feminazis to castrate the Pope, early in the book. And some, Like Kiley's dear friend William F. Buckley, Jr., in their ignorance, will no doubt accuse him of being a pantheist (not for the first time.) But, John Kiley is not a pantheist. He is that rarity, a religionist who knows what he is talking about. I know this, for I was witness to his enlightenment.

Some will like this book, some will not. It is hard to guess how it will fare in the marketplace. It has many of the qualities that make a "cult book," like, in the political arena, Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, but Kiley is a better writer and it is about religion, not politics.

I call them as I see them. Read the book, and see what you think.

Good summary
This book provides a concise and very readable summary of John Paul II philosophy of the human person. The main section of the book presents John Paul's philosophy of education by gathering together his many written thoughts on the matter -- works from both before and after becoming pope.
The entire book is very readable and understandable for all, whether or not you have a good grounding in philosophy. It gives some good "food for thought" for all educators.
